Spring Preparation: Cleaning, Treatments, and Getting Season-Ready

What We Did

  • All hives received Formic Pro with two strips.
  • We will reopen in two weeks.
  • Completed equipment cleanup: cleaned boxes, discarded old frames, and confirmed our mothball storage approach from last September was ineffective.

Hive Notes

R1H1

  • Received a top box from R2H1.
  • Queen-right.

R1H2

  • Given a top box of empty frames.
  • Queen-right.

R2H1

  • Confirmed queenless with worker eggs and drone brood.
  • Combined with R1H1.

R2H2

  • Split from R1H2.
  • Cut out excessive queen cells and left one frame with four good cells.

R3H1

  • Worked through the emergency Demaree setup and confirmed there was no queen.
  • It does not appear to have swarmed, so this was likely from my emergency Demaree move.
  • Cut excess queen cells and left two frames with five good cells total.
  • Combined the two brood boxes and removed supers.

R3H1 (Split from R1H2)

  • Cut out excessive queen cells and left two good candidates on one frame.
